Hayhurst Elias Dudek Inc. (HED) was formed on July 1, 1982 by the merger of Hayhurst Insurance Brokers, Lynch Elias Dudek and Associates Inc. and Harriott & Associates of Canada (1974) Ltd. Each of the three predecessor companies specialized in group insurance programs. On July 1, 1995 an American firm Hilb, Rogal and Hamilton Company (HRH), purchased Hayhurst Elias Dudek Inc. making HED Insurance Group their first Canadian acquisition. A year later HRH, through HED Insurance Group, then purchased Depres, Harland and Associates, who specialized in insurance and bonding for contractors, regular commercial brokerage and personal lines. This merger represented a strong complement to HED Insurance Group's own specialty areas and an even greater volume of commercial brokerage business. Late in 1997, HRH chose to focus on the US domestic intermediary market. As a result, HED Insurance Group management was invited to acquire HED Insurance Group and an agreement was concluded on December 31, 1998 . At this time The Co-operators Group became part of the ownership team. The Co-operators Group is the largest, wholly Canadian owned, multi-line insurance company with assets of over $4 billion. Their members are 29 co-operatives, credit unions and similarly structured organizations representing a combined membership of over 4.5 million Canadians. The Co-operators Group protects over one million Canadian drivers, over 750,000 homes and the lives of 470,000 Canadians. They also insure 240,000 employees through group benefit plans, 43,000 farms and 78,000 businesses. The Co-operators Group has been in business for over 50 years. HED Insurance Group is now one of the largest Canadian owned insurance brokers.
